John Whitten's Elbow Issues

Last Friday Shaun was playing with John Whitten and hurt his arm when he was swinging him around. It was a classic nursemaid's elbow, but it was so hard to see him hurting so badly. He couldn't even lift his arm let alone use it at all. Poor Shaun felt so bad that he had "hurt" his baby boy, but the doctor made him feel better when she told him it was really common. And they did tell us that sense it had now happened that it might happen again so to be really careful with him. Umm, not only did it happen again it happened four more times over the next three days. I was scared that if I even looked at him wrong his elbow would dislocate itself. After talking to our pediatrician Monday morning he suggested we go ahead and see a pediatric orthopedic that morning. We saw Dr. Killian Monday morning and poor John Whitten's elbow was still out of place from when it had come out earlier that morning. After Dr. Killian put it back her talked to me about casting it for a few weeks just to let everything in his elbow "settle down and heal", but I really didn't want to cast it unless we HAD to. Instead we decided to use a little sling that wrapped around his chest and help keep his arm still. He wore it for a few hours a day for a few days and then he was over it and refuses to put it on. At least his arm hasn't come out of place in the last few days, so I guess it is fine now. The crazy thing about all of this is that Shaun actually watched a YouTube video (two of them to be exact) on how to put John Whitten's elbow back in place...and then he did it!! The orthopedic actually said that this was fine, but I still cannot believe that I actually let him do it. Hey, it saved us a few co-pays....how horrible does that sound? The good news is that John Whitten's elbow has stayed in it's socket for almost a whole week now! Lets hope it stays that way.

The "Un-doing" That Makes Adoption Possible

For this child I have prayed. And the Lord has granted me what I asked of Him 1 Samuel 1:27. This is a popular verse in the Bible for any expecting Mommy. We see it on ceramic pink and blue crosses in baby boutiques. On birth announcements sent out by the proud parents. Its commonly read at baptisms, but there is more to Hannah's story...keep reading. So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD (vs 28). That's right, Hannah did not keep the son that God had blessed her with. God had fulfilled His promise to Hannah, and in return she fulfilled her convent to God. When her precious son was weaned (probably around 2 years of age) she took him to the temple and left him with Eli to be raised. In adoption lingo, she is the birthmother. It is hard for me to even begin to imagine what Hannah went through. Walking away from the son she longed to have...it breaks my heart to even think about.

Oh, Lillian...

Sunday John Whitten was walking around-naked of course- and I noticed he had something on his back. Or should I say someone had put something on his back. Lillian had put a temporary tattoo on him!! A monkey to be exact. I got the biggest chuckle out of this for some reason. I love my sweet Lillian. Even if she does treat her brother like her own personal life size baby doll.

We All Knew He Passed, But Now It's Legal!

Even though Shaun passed his final exam before Christmas he legally could not call himself a CPA. And Shaun is a stickler for the rules; he wouldn't even change his signature on his work email. So he really wanted his official letter to come in the mail ASAP! Well, it came on Saturday and Shaun could not wait to open it. I had gone to visit my home bound lady that afternoon when the mail came, but Shaun really wanted me to be there when he opened it so he waited. He waited a painful two hours-not without texting me three time and calling me twice- but I thought it was really sweet that he wanted me there to open it. We honestly feel like we did this together. Of course I took pictures....

Happy Birthday Emma!

Last Saturday we went to Oak Mountain's petting zoo for our friend Emma's third birthday!! I could not believe how lucky we were to have such amazing weather that morning. The kids were able to run around outside and the animals where all out; it was so nice! Lillian and John Whitten had a great time and we were so happy to get to celebrate Emma's birthday with her.

Adoption was something that was laid upon mine and Shaun's hearts shortly after Lillian was born. I actually credit Alli for opening my eyes to the need of foster children and orphans, and it just spiraled from there. But what was at first a feeling became a calling...a ministry within it's self. As Shaun and I continue to research adoption and pray over where God is leading us, we have asked each other a million different questions. Where will we adopt from? Will we adopt a special needs child? How will adoption affect our family? How will it affect our extended family? How will we afford the cost of an international or domestic adoption? When should we actually begin the paper work? The one question we have never needed to ask each other is- can we love the child God gives us through adoption, in the same way we love our biological children? There has never been any doubt that the endless love we feel for Lillian and John Whitten is the same love that is already growing in our hearts for the child God has for us through adoption. Two babies I carried in my tummy and one Shaun and I will carry in our hearts.

A Boy And His Baby!?!

This mornings Lillian was getting her bitty baby ready-changing her diaper and clothes-and John Whitten would not leave her alone. He kept trying to get bitty baby away from Lillian and she was getting upset...it went on like that for a few minutes until Lillian figured out a solution. She went to her room got another baby doll out of basket and brought it to John Whitten saying, "Here Buddy, you play with this baby". He took the baby from her and hasn't let it go since. It is really very sweet, he pats the baby's and give it sweet kisses and hugs. But he also throws baby, bangs baby's head against the coffee table and fireplace, and a few other things that would surely be consider child abuse. When I try to take the baby away he starts crying, so he has just been walking around with his baby all day long.

Look at the the nations and watch--and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.

Is It Too Late For A New Years Post?

2011 was an amazing year for our family-Shaun changed departments at his job (this was a big adjustment for us b/c it is such a demanding department so he's home less), we bought a house and moved, welcomed a gorgeous nephew and a beautiful niece into our family, celebrated John Whitten's first birthday, and from April to November Shaun studied and sat for the four sections of the CPA and PASSED!

Shaun and I are excited to see what God has in store for our family in 2012. We do not want an accidental life...we want to fulfill the purpose that God has for us and hope that our choices are glorifying to Him.

Our 2012 Goals:

Missions-Shaun wants to go on a mission trip in July with our church through Children's Hope Chest. We are praying that timing and finances all work out for him to go.
Continue to actively seek God's will for our family
Make more time for each other; have a date night once a month.
Find a way to get my Home Bound lady, Mrs. Heatherly to church. She misses it so much but has been too weak to make it there, I know that being able to sit in our church would make her SO happy.
Our biggest hope/goal is that we will be able begin the adoption process at some point this year. Shaun and I have spent a lot of time in prayer over this, and know that God's timing is perfect.

The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

Friday At The Park

Have I ever mentioned how much I LOVE Alabama winters!?! Today, on December 30 we were running around the park all morning with nothing more than light jackets on the kids. And honestly, they could have easily done without those. I swear, on days like today I appreciate being able to stay home with my babies that much more! Shaun called us today while were there and I just wanted to beg him to leave work and come play with us outside; but someones got to pay the bills. Alli and the boys met us there and my Mom came too. She doesn't go back to work until next Tuesday so she has been enjoying her extra time with her grandbabies. Afterwards we went over to Shane's Rib Shack for lunch; so good! I hear a cold spell is coming in on New Years day, so we are going to soak in as much 65 degree weather as we can and go to the Zoo tomorrow!

Let me just throw a shout out to the best sister ever-Alli you are a super Mommy! Your boys are so lucky to have you and I cannot wait to see you holding your sweet baby Nations #3! I don't know how you do everything you do. All I know is that I am so happy that we get to raise our little rugrats together! These days at the park wouldn't be as much fun without you!

My Sweet Boy's 15 Month Check Up

The kids and I went to see our favorite pediatrician, Dr. Walley, yesterday for John Whitten's 15 month check up. I am so thankful that we haven't had to see Dr. Walley for anything but well baby check ups since John Whitten had his last ear infection at six months old! Lillian hasn't seen him for anything other than well baby/well big kid check ups except for one time in her entire life! Our family has definitely been blessed with good health and I am so grateful for that, but I digress....John Whitten looked great! Dr. Walley said that he is super tall and is growing like a weed. Here are his measurements:

weight: 25 lbs 3 oz (75 percentile)
height: 32 1/2 inches (95-100 percentile)

We didn't get out of there completely pain free, John Whitten did have to get two shots and they did not make him happy. After that trauma we thought that it would be a good idea to meet Shaun for lunch before heading home for naps. John Whitten took an extra long nap and still went right to bed last night at his usual 7:00 bedtime. I guess the poor boy was just worn out.

Christmas With The Greene's

On Monday, we had our traditional Greene Family day after Christmas dinner. I LOVE this dinner, and it is always so much fun to all be together. Mark, and his girlfriend Rachel, were here from Texas and Johnny, Emily and sweet Graham had driven in from Nashville that morning. The one thing all of us look forward to is our annual Christmas dinner singing! Yes, you read that right...singing. Shaun was even given the honor to lead off our big finisher Jingle Bell Rock. He had been practicing, so he did a pretty good job.

Johnny gave the toast this year, and I think he summed us up pretty well- what we have is special. Growing up I just thought that our family was normal, but as I got older I realized that it was far from it. And I am so grateful for that.

Christmas 2011

Christmas 2011 was a huge success's in our book! We kept the focus on Jesus Christ, the real reason for the season, and we enjoyed a relaxing day with our families. On Christmas morning Lillian woke up and waited patiently for her brother to wake up so they could open presents together. When John Whitten finally did wake up she insisted that he open all of his presents first. It was really sweet to watch her bring him his presents one by one, and then when he opened it she would say, "Oh, are you so excited John Whitten?" Lillian was so excited when she opened her new bitty baby crib, and promptly took it to her room to make a place for baby to sleep.

After opening presents we got ready for church- I LOVED that Christmas fell on a Sunday this year. There wasn't any child care or Sunday school, so the kids went with us to services and they did SO good! It was a regular hour long service and it only took a package of goldfish to get Lillian and John Whitten through it. Sweet John Whitten would dance every time we sang, and spent most of the service flirting with the people in the pew behind us. Afterwards we headed over to Alli and Korey's house for lunch. The kids had a great time playing together and we even had a birthday cake and sang for Baby Jesus.

That evening, after naps, we headed over to celebrate Christmas with the Long/Hays. We are always so grateful for everything they do for us, and the kids LOVED all of their presents. Lillian has made me wash and rewash her and her baby's matching pjs that she got. Of course Tina made a wonderful dinner and we were stuffed and ready for bed when we got home that evening.

It was a great Christmas, and Shaun and I just loved watching our children grow in their understanding of Jesus Christ and just how important His birth was to us.

Merry Christmas Eve!

Merry Christmas Eve! Already our Christmas has been a busy, but fun one! This morning we ran a few last minute errands before heading over to my Grandparents house for lunch. The kids had a great time playing with each other and playing with their presents my Grandparents gave them. Lillian got a bunch of clothes for her bitty baby, the bitty baby highchair and a diaper bag complete with cloth diapers! Needless to say she spent the rest of the day constantly changing her baby's diaper and clothes. Afterwards we went back to my parents house to hang out until it was time for church. I tried to get the kids to take a nap, but they were simply to excited from the morning. Shaun however had no problem dozing off for a couple of hours. Of course the second we got the kids in the car to head to church they passed out! Shaun I figured it was better to just head home instead. We ate dinner, put the kids in the bath and then Shaun read us the Christmas story from the Bible before putting the kids to bed.

I am so excited for them to wake up tomorrow so that we can continue to celebrate Jesus' birthday! Lillian is SO excited to take go over to Eli's house after church so that she can give him his present. It is all she has talked about all night.

Lillian Is Growing...Spiritually

There is not a day that goes by that Shaun and I don't question whether or not we are doing a good job parenting. In the end all we can do is parent in the direction that we feel God is leading us, and pray that it is glorifying to Him. Still, I wrestle with doubt and fear everyday that I am making choices that will send my kids running straight into the arms/office of the nearest therapist. But then Shaun and I remind each other that we are not doing this parenting thing on our own. God is right there with us; one temper tantrum at a time. I blog often about Lillian's physical growth, but I have yet to blog about her spiritual growth.

Earlier today I had put away a ton of laundry into Lillian drawers. Tonight when she was getting ready for bed she came out of her room and yelled down the hall to me, "Thank you Mommy for washing my panties for me". She not only had noticed that I had put more clothes in her drawer, but she actually went out of her way to tell me thank you. She is always noticing the small things that Shaun and I do for her, and it is such a wonderful feeling to have her thank us for it.

On Wednesday my Mom came over to our house for a little visit and when she asked Lillian what she wanted for Christmas she said, "umm, I really am not sure what I want. Maybe just some paint. Would you please just get me a little new paint, Grammy?". When my mom asked her what else she wanted Lillian said, "I don't need anything else". One of mine and Shaun's biggest prayers for our children is that they learn to guard their hearts from the desires of the world. This is something that even Shaun and I struggle with so we know that our children will struggle with this too as they grow up. We will all have moments of selfishness and want, but we pray that Lillian and John Whitten learn to recognize that sinful desire and turn away from those moments of weakness. When my mom asked her what she wanted for Christmas, I could see God working in Lillian's heart when she just didn't start naming off any and every toy she could think of.

She has become very inquisitive of God and Jesus and what it is all about. It has been tough answering some of her questions, because she is asking questions that's answers are a little beyond her full three year old comprehension. Still we do our best to answer her straight forward, and Shaun and I have found it to be such a wonderful pleasure to share God's promises and word with our daughter. Every night she gets to chose three books for us to read to her before bed. And every night for the past three weeks she has chosen the "Bible stories". The other day I listened to her explain to John Whitten why she decided to share her toy with him, It went a little something like this...."John Whitten, you can see my microphone. I am sharing with you like the little boy shared his fish and bread with Jesus", feeding the the five thousand. We love to use that story of an example of sharing. And Lillian loves to tell it to John Whitten whenever she wants one if his toys he is playing with.

Now you may not read these little stories/examples and understand what exactly I am talking about, but for Shaun and I God's hand in our daughters life is undeniable. I am so proud of the little girl that she is growing into, and Shaun and I are so excited to see how God continues to work and grow in her heart on a daily basis. Our amazing little girl is growing, and growing in the most important way.

15 Months!

John-Whitten has really changed over the last couple of months. He is so mischievous and gets into everything. Lillian was not that way at all, so we have really learned that we have to be on our toes with this little boy. One of his favorite things to do right now is to take things and throw them in the trash can in the kitchen. He also has learned to climb up on things and there have been a few bloody lips and bumps on the head over the past few weeks. He lights up our days and I am so grateful for his sweet face. I cannot praise God enough for my angle boy.

Here are a few highlights about John-Whitten at 15 months:

Still LOVES his Mommy. I was gone the other night and Shaun said he walked around the house crying and looking for me until he finally gave up.
He is still nursing. Not sure how or when I will wean him, but we are both happy with the relationship (he is especially happy, too happy I think) so it won't be anytime soon.
We have not made the progress I thought we would in the eating department, but he has gotten much better. He throws up less, and I have learned that some foods trigger a reaction more than others, so I avoid those. We go back to the doctor after the first of the year, so we will see what he has to say about it.
He is 25.2 lbs (I weighed him this morning)
He is such a climber, but hasn't figured out yet the best way to get off of the things he climbs up on. He usually just tries to walk off of whatever the object is, i.e the bloody lips and bumps on the head I previously mentioned.
He goes to bed at 7:00-7:15, wakes up once or twice, and then sleeps until 8:30.
His main food is still yogurt
He loves to take the tops off of things and put them back on.
He still doesn't say much other than Momma and Dadda. He has a sound he uses for yes, but I don't count it as a word. However he can follow directions very well, so I know that he understands language.
OBSESSED with balls or anything that is the shape of a ball.
He really loves playing with with Lillian. For the longest time she treated him like a toy, but now they play really well together. Most of the time anyway...
He is so loving and I love to hold him up to Shaun and say, "Can't you just feel his goodness!?!"
He LOVES music and will stop and dance whenever he hears it.

Overall, our sweet son is growing like a weed and keeping us busy. Before we know it he will be turning two! We love you, John Whitten!

A Day In The Life...

Any Stay at Home Mommy will tell you that there can be some pretty rough days that will send even the most patient mommy running for the nearest daycare. Just like any other job, sometimes you just have a bad day at the office. Most good days involve one melt down and at least one near death experience, so you can imagine the bad ones. However, I would never change a thing about my life. Being a Mommy is the only thing I have ever wanted to be and I remind myself everyday, especially during those melt downs, that these moments are fleeting. And I am painfully aware that this time in my babies lives is precious.

Shaun came home the other day and I kept apologizing for the house being a mess, dinner being late and for his iPod touch that somehow got thrown into the washing machine. In my mind I hadn't done my job because I just gotten caught up in the day playing with Lillian and John Whitten. In the middle of my let me tell you all the reasons I didn't get my usual stuff done speech Shaun stopped me and said, "it sounds like you did exactly what you were suppose to do today; you played with our kids". He was unaware at that moment that he wouldn't have a clean undershirt the next morning because I hadn't gotten to that load of laundry that day. But I have to admit, I fell a little bit more in love with him in that moment. My life is about my kids. My days are all about play dates and story times. It is about play dough and finger paints. It unfortunately is also about dirty diapers and melt downs (a down side to the job). It is about morning cuddles and afternoon naps. Not everyone gets the chance in life to do a job they truly love. So I am thankful that not only do I love my job, but I am in love with the little monkeys that I work for. It's not for everyone, but it is definitely right up my ally.

When You've Been Out Of Town For A Week....

Of course I am not the only girl in Shaun's life so I am not the only one who get flowers.

And of course you should always be sure to take you girl out on a date. I mean you have been away from her for a whole week.

Shaun Is A CPA!

That's right, my awesome hubby is officially a CPA! I really cannot even begin to tell you how incredibly proud I am of Shaun. Some how over the last 2 1/2 years he has managed to juggle family, work, career change, one pregnancy, a new baby, a two/three year old, and a sometimes emotional but supportive wife. He never once complained about his crazy and demanding schedule, and he always made time for Lillian and John Whitten. It goes without saying that both Shaun and I are happy that this season of our lives is over, but honestly we are so grateful for these last 2 1/2 years. God really used this time to revel himself to us in new and exciting ways, and for that we are so grateful. I praise Him for Shaun, and for the incredible husband, Father and provider that he is. I pray that all of Shaun's accomplishments are glorifying to Him.

...Mommies will get together and play! Shaun is out of town with work for the week so the kids and I have kept busy. My dear friend Kelley's hubby is also out of town for work so we decided to get together for some dinner play dates. Tuesday Kelley, Hudson and Lois Anne came over to our house and tonight we went over to their house. The kids have fun, the Mommies get some adult time, and then its home for baths, books, prayers bed!

We have definitely missed Shaun and cannot wait for him to be home! Lillian starts to really feel his absence after a few days. Tonight she had a total melt down because she wanted him to cuddle her. It is so hard for me to watch her get so upset when she misses her Daddy, because there is nothing I can do. Tonight we said an extra prayer, one just for her Daddy, and then I cuddled her until she fell asleep. We can't wait for Shaun to come home.

Our Thanksgiving Vacation-Part One

Last Monday Shaun sat for the last portion of the CPA (pending a passing score), Tuesday we decorated our house for Christmas and on Wednesday we loaded up the car and headed to the beach for a MUCH needed family vacation.

Shaun and I have so much to be thankful for. First and foremost we are forever thankful and undeserving of our Lord and Savior's eternal love and salvation. We are beyond grateful for our beautiful children and the joy they bring into our lives everyday.

Lillian's Thanksgiving Lunch

Last week we went to Lillian's Thanksgiving lunch at her preschool. She was so excited that her Daddy was going to be there and when she walked in she literally was squealing, "my Daddy is here, my Daddy is here". Her teacher Mrs. Kelly told me that she had done nothing that morning but talk about how her Daddy and baby brother were coming to her school. I guess she wasn't as excited to see me there. It is always so much fun to see her at school with her little friends; it was so cute.

14 Months Old!

Just a couple of days ago my sweet baby boy turned 14 months old! He has changed so much just over the last two months. He still loves his Mommy as always, but I have been second pick to his Daddy a lot lately. John Whitten is obsessed with balls and will throw them down the hall and then walk to it, pick it up and throw it again. It so funny because its like he's playing catch with himself. He has definitely stared standing up to Lillian more. Just today he shocked me while they were being goofballs together- Lillian will stand in the hallway and say, "I am blocking the road John Whitten". He knows that's his cue to walk over to her giggling and crawl "under the bridge". But today when he bent down to crawl under he hesitated and stood up and pushed Lillian down to the floor and walked right over her. They both thought it was funny (and really did too), but I had to get on to him a little bit. I don't want him thinking its just okay to push girls around. He is doing better with his eating, and probably only throws up once or twice a week when he is trying foods now. He is still nursing three to four times a day, but I am trying to make it only twice a day-at afternoon naps and bed time. Sweet John Whitten doesn't say much, but he says "Mama, Dada (Shaun) Da (my Dad) Bye, bye" and that's about it. He gives the sweetest kisses in the world! He laughs all the time and pretty much only cries when he is tired or when he is having his diaper changed. I am so thankful to have this wonderful little boy in my life! He is such a blessing!

Disney On Ice

On Sunday afternoon Lillian and I left the boys to do boy things, while we went on a little date to see Disney On Ice. Usually it is Shaun and Lillian's thing that they do together every year, but I wanted to do something special just the two of us so I took her this year. We had so much fun, and Lillian LOVED the show. I told Shaun that we really should let her watch more TV because she had no idea who anyone was other than Mickey and the gang. So she spent a lot of time asking me, "Who's that? What are they doing? Why are they skating". She was still able to enjoy it and I was so happy to get to spend some one on one time with her a special event. Shaun and John Whitten did a "super secret mission" but wont tell me what it was because it will ruin the surprise later Shaun said. He was happy to have some time with his little boy too.

3 Down, 1 To Go...

Well, he's on his way to a CPA (if I have to hear that man from Shaun's lectures say that one more time I might throw his computer out the window). Shaun found out last week that he passed his third portion of the CPA; the BEC section. That means he only has ONE section left, the REG portion, and he will officially be a CPA! I am so proud of him that I could burst, and I know that he is relieved to be through with another test. He has really been flying through them considering they give you 18 months to take and pass all four sections. He took his first test in April, another in May, got results for those two in June, then took this last one October. He will sit for the last section the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Please, keep him in your prayers over these next few weeks as he studies. We are so proud of him and praise God for all his accomplishments.

Halloween 2011

This Halloween was extra special to Shaun and I because it was the first Halloween that we have gotten to trick-or-treat in our own neighborhood. Two of our past Halloweens we lived in Adamsville and the other one we lived in our townhouse, so we have always trick-or-treated with Alli, Korey and the boys in their neighborhood. But now we are in our long term, probably our forever home, and it felt so good to walk around last night and know that we would trick-or-treat here for the rest of our kids childhood. We just praise God for putting us in this home and in this neighborhood that we love.

Shaun and I thought that Lillian would probably trick-or-treat five or six houses and then get burned out, but boy were we wrong. After every house she would say, "Can I please trick-or-treat again?".After and hour an a half of collecting candy we finally headed home and took the kids to Zaxby's for dinner. It was free for kids dressed up in their costumes, so all four of us ate dinner for $10 bucks!

McWane Monday-Our New Favorite Activity

So apparently Mondays are the absolute BEST days to go to the McWane center. We meet Lillian's school friend, Clara, and her Mommy who love hanging out with for a last minute play date and the girls had a great time together. I also met up with an old high school friend of mine and her two boy (3 yrs and 10 days!), it was great to catch up with her and her boys were gorgeous!

I did everything possible to avoid the McWane center during the summer months because it was always so crazy with schools being out, but now it is the perfect place for the kids and I to go and just run wild. I LOVE these days with my little ones. I was watching the kids play at the water table while we were there and Lillian and John Whitten were splashing the water and laughing and I just wanted to freeze that moment. I know that one day I will be watching the walk across the stage at their high school graduation and I will think back on that Monday at McWane center when my babies were splashing and laughing at the water table.

Our Day At Tannehill State Park

This morning we decided to pack up the kids and head to Tannehill State Park for their annual Halloween Festival. The weather was AMAZING and we had so much fun walking around looking at all the different booths and vendors. Lillian had a lot of fun playing in the bouncy house, going down the inflatable slide, eating corn dogs, and running through the woods. After spending the whole day at Tannehill we came home and went on a walk around the neighborhood with Lillian riding her bike, grilled out and built our first fire of the season. It was exactly the kind of day our family needed. My heart doesn't have enough praise; I am so amazed by God's many blessings and doings in our lives.

Halloween Festival With The Family

It is a little family tradition of ours to go to the Hoover Halloween festival at Veteran's Park every year. We meet up with my parents and Alli, Korey and the boys for some trick-or-treating, yummy (free) food and hayrides. Each year it seems like there are more and more people that come out for this event, and Hoover does such a good job keeping it organized so that everyone has fun. The hayride is always Lillian's favorite part, but this year she was a little more into the trick-or-treating part of things. Our sweet John Whitten just wanted to wander around and look at all the other kids in their costumes. The kids were worn out by the time we got home, so I always consider that a sign that they had a pretty good time.

Getting A Hand On Being One Handed

Monday Shaun had to go back to work after having been off last Thursday and Friday, and I was on my own with the kids for the first time since my surgery. Alli came over in the morning with breakfast and pretty much took care of the kids while we talked and hung out. She was a LIFE SAVER that morning and I was so grateful that she was there. My good friend Jenny even came by and dropped off lunch for me and Lillian (she even brought John Whitten some fries), which I appreciated so much. It was yummy comfort food; Hamburger Heaven! After Alli left (she had to pick up Eli from school) is when things got tough. Neither of the kids would nap, and because of that John Whitten insisted on being held ALL afternoon. Lillian was good, she just wanted to go to the park and I couldn't handle it at the time. Of course I can't take any of my pain medicine when I am with the kids by myself because it knocks me out, so I was counting down the hours until Shaun was coming home so I could drug myself. I was in tears by 5:00.

Tuesday wasn't much better. Lillian went to school and I went back home to try and rest but ended up just trying to make a cranky teething toddler happy; it was not relaxing. On my way to pick Lillian up from school I got my cast caught in the steering wheel and tore a stitch out of my hand (had to take both kiddos with me to the doctor to have more stitches put in today). Again, I was in tears almost by 5:00.; Thank the Lord of an amazing husband who came home from work (almost on time) to take of me.

I wasn't expecting to feel much better today but to my surprise I felt great when I woke up this morning. I had to take the kids to the pediatrician, and that went surprisingly well. Then we had to go to my doctor to have my stitches fixed. Afterwards we headed to the park and then back home where EVERYONE napped! A HUGE thank you to Tara Ross who brought us dinner today, it was delicious! I am mastering the one handed diaper change, and dressing John Whitten has gotten a little easier. My sweet Lilly bug has been such a little helper and asks me a few times a day if we can say a prayer to help my arm feel better. I told her today that all of her prayers are working because it is feeling like my hand is on the mend.

Thank you so much to our friends and family who have brought us dinner and called us to check in on us. God has put amazing people in our lives and we are so grateful for everyone of them.

Our Post Surgery Weekend

Thursday I had surgery on my right hand to repair a tendon that was torn. They ended up having to do a tendon transfer and tether a good tendon in my hand to the damaged one. The surgery its self was pretty uneventful, but these lat few days have been interesting. I have to be really careful with my hand because the doctor said it would be very easy to "un-do everything" he had fixed just by turning my hand the wrong way. It is frustrating at times, but I am learning my limitations.

Let me just say that Shaun has been nothing short of amazing these last four days! Not only has he taken great care of me but is pretty much a super Daddy with our babies. I have spent this past weekend relaxing and sleeping, just trying to heal up as much as I can before Shaun goes back to work Monday. He has a really busy work week ahead of him and won't be home until after bedtime every night this week, so I need to be as good to go as possible.

I am so thankful to our friends and family who have called to check in and brought us little treats and dinner. It has been SO helpful and we feel so blessed to have such wonderful, loving people in our lives.

She is so careful to stay in the lines (she doesn't get that from her Mommy) that she just doesn't have enough time to finish. Daddy-Daughter Date Night

Shaun has been working and studying a lot lately, so Saturday night he and Lillian had a much needed date. Lillian is 100% a Daddy's girl these days, so she couldn't have been more excited when Shaun asked her if she wanted to go to dinner with him. She decided that she was going to wear her princess dress, and that Shaun needed to wear a tie with his "work shirt" (any button up shirt is a work shirt in her mind). After dinner they came home and had a book party. Lillian loves to read, so having a book party made perfect sense.

I am so glad that Lillian and Shaun got that time together. And I am so grateful that Lillian has a Daddy who wants to make special time for just him and his little girl. I know that these are memories she will cherish as she grows up.

Trip To Nashville

This past week the kids and I decided to go to Nashville and visit Johnny, Emily and sweet Graham. Shaun had a lot of studying to do this week for his CPA, so as much as we missed him I knew that we really wouldn't see much of him anyway if we had stayed in Birmingham. We had so much fun spending time with Johnny and Emily, I and could not believe how big sweet Graham is getting. He is 15 weeks old now and weighs 14 pounds, so he is really growing. We went on walks, played on the playground in Johnny and Emily's neighborhood, ate some yummy food, drank some good wine (after the kids were in bed of course) and just had a relaxing few days. Nashville is SO pretty and I would seriously move up there if I thought it wouldn't send my parents to an early grave having another one of their children move out of state. Oh, and of course I could only move if Alli and Korey would move with us :)

I have to admit that it makes me a little nervous driving up there by myself with little ones, but the kids did great. Its just the logistics of it that can be frustrating. Like when Lillian needs to go potty and John Whitten has just fallen asleep. I can't very well leave him in the car to take Lillian into a gas station to potty. Just little things like that can make a solo trip a bit more difficult. On our way home we stoped in Huntsville to eat lunch and play. We ended up staying there for two hours!

Thanks Johnny and Emily for letting us come and visit, Lillian hasn't stopped talking about it! We will be back soon! Love you!

Walk For ALS

Our Sunday school teacher Suzanne was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) almost a year ago after experiencing symptoms that went undiagnosed for almost two years. Suzanne is one of those people that doesn't just touch your life, but floods it. She is an amazing example of what a Christian women, wife and mother is, and seeing her faith in God only grow stronger throughout her struggle has been inspiring. On Saturday we went to Vestavia Hills High School for the Walk For ALS to show our support for Suzanne and her amazing family. Our team name was Suzanne's Superheroes!! The walk raised $95,000 dollars (w/ our team raising the most of the money)! ALS is a horrible disease, and I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to show my support and raise money for ALS research.

It has been hard watching Suzanne's condition get worse over the years, but I am so grateful for how God has worked in my life because of Suzanne and her battle with ALS. She has taught me what it truly means to be a prayer worrier. And my prayer life has been strengthened greatly because of Suzanne and I am forever grateful to her for that.

Where Have I Been?!?

I feel like it has been FOREVER sense I have posted anything, but I do have good reason (no, its not the same good reason Alli has had). Things have been CRAZY around our home lately and I either just lose track of the days or am simply too exhausted to blog after I get the kids down for the night. Not to mention I tore a small ligament in my hand and it hurts to type after a few sentences, so I just get frustrated and stop trying.

Friday At The Zoo With Graham

Johnny, Emily and sweet Graham came to visit this past weekend! They came to town on Thursday afternoon so we got to spend a lot of time with them over the three days they were here. On Friday Lillian, John Whitten and I met them at the Birmingham Zoo. It was so nice to spend the morning with them just strolling around enjoying the AMAZING weather! I kept laughing because Johnny wanted to hold Graham up next to the animals while I or Emily snapped a picture of him. I could just see the rooster or the goat wanting to take a little nip at Graham; I mean he does look pretty tasty! We all grabbed lunch together after we left the zoo and before heading home for naps.

I was so good to see Johnny, Emily and Graham. I could not get over how BIG sweet Graham is now, and all the different things he is doing. I am planning on the kids and I going up to Nashville this Thursday after I pick Lillian up from school, and staying until Saturday or Sunday morning. It will be a fun trip and give Shaun some much needed time to study for his upcoming exam (third portion of CPA). He sits the week of October 10th and hasn't hardly had any time to study because he's been working so much. So I think going to Nashville will work out perfectly for all of us!

Yes, this is Shaun changing John Whitten's diaper with Lillian hanging on his back! He has been working so many long nights and weekends lately that when he is home Lillian sticks pretty close to her Daddy.

I really do not know how this man does everything that he does (w/out having a breakdown anyway). Not only has he been working, on average, 12 hour days for the last few weeks but then he comes home and studies for the CPA. The craziest part about it is that I NEVER EVER hear him complain about any of it. If anything I hear the opposite. I hear him praise God for the opportunities he has to excel in his job and to provide for our family. Thank you Shaun. I know these last few weeks, months really, have been hard on you. But I don't know what we would do without you!

AU vs MSU...A Post Long Over Due

A couple of weeks ago we went down to the plains to tailgate with our good friend and her family! I was excited to be in Auburn, but I was even more excited to be in Auburn tailgating with our friend Martina who now lives in Huntsville. Lillian, Colton and Eli had so much fun running around all over the place and playing together. Lillian is still talking about how she got to see her friend Colton in Auburn. I think Shaun and Korey were a little disappointed that Martina's husband Camron wasn't there to hang out with (he had to work), but hopefully we will all be able to get together again soon! All in all it was a great Saturday on the plains! We spent time with great friends, ate great food, and saw a GREAT game.

One Year Check Up

Lillian and I took John Whitten to see Dr. Walley for his one year check last week, and believe it or not this little boy is slimming up! But before I get to the good stuff let me give you a little run down of my sweet boys milestones:

-he is walking everywhere! Shaun makes fun of me for still counting how many steps he takes at one time. I called him the other day and said, "John Whitten just took 32 steps!!" Shaun's response, "Melissa, he is just a walker now. You can stop counting".

-still doesn't eat food, but we are working on it. We can get him to eat yogurt and that is better than nothing we think.

-LOVES to dance and clap his hands

-he is wearing 18-24 month clothes

-is starting to climb on everything. He will pitch the cutest little fit if you make him get off of something.

-he has really started to want to be with Shaun a lot more lately! When Shaun comes home he walks right up to him saying, "Dada, Dada, Dada" and holding his arms up to him. But believe me, he is still a Mamma's boy.

-LOVES for me to push him in his little car and go on walks

-he laughs ALL of the time

-says "Momma" and "Dada" very clearly and jabbers all of the time.

-he melts my heart....

I cannot get over the fact that this little boy is ONE! Blows me away to think about how much he has grown and changed over these last 12 months. Okay, now for the numbers you have all be waiting for:

John Whitten's Cookie Party

Last Saturday we had family over to our house to celebrate our sweet boy VERY FIRST birthday! We did a If You Give A Mouse A Cookie theme and I think it turned out really cute. We even had a special addition If You Give A Mouse A Cookie book that everyone one signed and wrote little birthday wishes in so that John Whitten could look back one day and see who was all at his FIRST party. We had a lot of food and a TON of cake (I ordered the wrong size by accident), and the kids had a good time playing together outside. It was a great party and we were so excited to be able to celebrate our little boys birth with our wonderful family.

A Wonderful Day With My ONE Year Old!

Tonight, Shaun and I put our ONE year old baby boy to bed tonight after spending a wonderful day together as a family. Shaun and I dropped Lillian off at school this morning and then took John Whitten to get his first pair of shoes. He is walking all over the place now, so the timing could not have been any better. After getting shoes and running a few errands we headed back to pick up Lillian and home to eat lunch and take naps. Alli, Korey and the boys came over and brought us dinner tonight to help us celebrate our sweet boys birthday. We will have the rest of our families over on Saturday for his actual birthday party, but were excited to have a little celebration tonight.

Happy Birthday John Whitten

A year ago today, at 1:32 pm, Shaun and I saw first hand one of God's most beautiful doings...our son was born. This last year has been amazing watching John Whitten grow up and reach all of the different milestones. I honestly believe that there is nothing more bittersweet than watching your children grow up. But at the same time I can honestly say that I don't feel like I missed a moment of it. I have appreciated every second with John Whitten. I have rocked him for hours at a time. I have read to him every book in our house. I have ignored the laundry and dirty dishes, and instead cuddled my son while he slept in the afternoons. I have laid in bed with him at night and memorized every single delicate feature on his beautiful face. Shaun and I have prayed over him, cried over him and grown closer together because of him. We are SO in love with our son and are amazed everyday at what an amazing gift God has given us in him.

My dear John Whitten,

So much has changed since the first time I held you,

just look at you now.

You are all smiles, all of the time.

You truly are God's workmanship, and I cannot wait to see what good works He has prepared for you to do. John Whitten, mine and your Daddy's biggest prayer for you is that you will always seek God's will for your beautiful life.

Lillian's FIRST Day!!

Today was my sweet Lillian's first day of 3k preschool. Tuesday was suppose to be her actual first day, but it was canceled due to the storms from the night before. I have to admit this morning I was hoping my phone would ring, and it would be her teacher telling me that the school was still without power and they wouldn't be starting until next week. But a phone call never came and after taking a million first day of school pictures at home we loaded up the car and headed to drop Lillian off. The three of us said a little prayer in the car and then I walked her into her classroom. She was a little hesitant and gave me an extra long hug when I said goodbye, but over all drop off went pretty smoothly. Of course I cried the second I got in the car; I don't know if the first day will ever get easy. When I went to pick her up she told me, "Mommy, I had so much fun. I was sad for a little bit, but I did not cry. I held my teachers hand". It made my heart so happy to know that she fun today, but I was so glad when it came time for me to pick her up.

I saw where someone did this for their daughter's teacher and thought it was so cute. We filled this tumbler cup w/ candy and put a little note on it saying, "Have a sweet year".

*Of course I stalked her teacher down via email this afternoon to get a quick run down of how she did on her first day. This was her response:

Melissa,
She was a little sad at first but she never cried. She sat on my lap at the door as we greeted the other kids that came in. It's kind of hard at first because at 9:15 I leave them for 15 minutes for music but she came out of music all smiles and was happy from there on out! She played well with the other kids and at playground time she rode the swings and rode the tricycle some. (She also walked around and held my hand). We did a special handprint craft that is drying so I will send it home on Tuesday. She is so very sweet and I made sure she felt special because she got to stay and eat lunch with me. I must admit I do have the sweetest girls. I had 8 children (all of the 3's) at lunch time so she had plenty of company. I'm hoping she was okay when you picked her up. The first day can be so confusing sometimes until they get the hang of our schedule.
I hope your doctor appt went well and John Whitten ? will start scarfing down french fries soon!

John Whitten's New Car Seat!

As most of my Mommy friends and my poor husband knows, I get a little over excited about strollers and car seats. So of course when John Whitten's new cowmooflage car seat showed up on our door step it made my day! Lilian seemed to be just as excited as I was, but John Whitten didn't seem to car to much about it at first. Still, I LOVE It, and I think that he looks SO cute in it.

Hays Home Projects

We bought our house a four months ago and have been trying to do little things to it here and there since we moved in. Thankfully we really didn't need to do too much, we have just painted John Whitten's room and installed some recessed lighting in our den. I have tried not to ask too much of Shaun because he is still studying for his CPA, and I know that he doesn't need me adding home projects to his To Do List. After church on Sunday Shaun took out our one (old) hallway light and replaced it with three can lights. It looks so good, and really gave us a lot more light in our hall. Today Shaun painted Lillian's bedroom. We had asked her a couple of weeks ago what color she wanted to paint her room and she said "purple". I wanted to give her what she wanted but didn't want her room to be some crazy purple color. We took her to the paint store and we picked out a light/ very sweet purple and it looks great!! I am so happy that Shaun was able to get so much done this weekend, and love all the progress we are making in our home.

Saturday Splash Pad

Shaun had warned me on Thursday that this coming week was going to be a crazy one for him and that he would be working a lot of late hours. So this weekend we wanted to make sure that we got to spend some good family time together. Saturday Shaun made the ULTIMATE sacrifice any man can make during the fall season...he missed the Auburn game! We watched it later that afternoon during the kids naps, but still I know that it was a little difficult for him not to watch it live. However, we had a great time together at the Splash Pad and I was excited that Shaun finally got to go with us to it this summer.

Family Movie Night

Shaun and I are kind of weird about the kids watching tv, mainly because when it is on Lillian zeros in on it and I hate that. So when she does get to watch something it is a BIG deal and she gets very excited. This past Friday night we decided to have a family movie night! The kids and I met Shaun at Blockbuster and let her pick out a movie. She picked the old school version of Peter Pan. Shaun pulled a mattress in to the den and we made pop corn and watched our movie. Lillian was scared of Captain Hook, but she didn't want to stop watching it she just wanted to cuddle up to her Daddy a little tighter.

I love making these memories with our kids. It is funny how making a bed in the den, and getting movie theater popcorn bags can make watching an old Disney movie so exciting for all of us.

My Dear Lillian

Today I laid down with Lilian until she fell asleep for her afternoon nap. I pretty much do this every day now, but most of the time I pop right up to go about my business once I am convinced she is completely asleep. But today I laid with her a little longer. I cuddled her a little tighter.

I am completely amazed at what an amazingly kind, sweet, funny, independent, helpful, shy, silly girly little girl that Lillian has grown into. I praise God every day for her precious little life, and am still in awe that He created this child to be Shaun and mine's daughter. I think your first born always holds an extra special place in a Mommy's heart. My whole life I have never wanted anything more than to be a Mother, and Lillian gave me that. She made my dream come true the moment she entered this world, all 7 lbs and 2 oz of her. That wonderful little girl made me a Mommy and I am forever grateful to her for that amazing gift! I pray that she always knows how special she is, and how much she is loved by her family.

I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ.
