Ear Infections

On Thursday John Whitten started running a low fever (100-101), but was overall acting normal so I decided to hold off on rushing him to the doctor. Let me say that I am not good at spotting illness. Other than Lillian's very random brain steam infection that landed us in the hospital, she has only had one ear infection and a cold here or there over her basically three years of life. She hasn't seen our pediatrician sense her two year check-up nine months ago. So when John Whitten started running a fever I chumped it up to something viral or teething, but never thought it was really anything to take him to the doctor over. Then Friday rolled around and he was still overall happy but also still running a fever; this time it was staying steady at 102. Still, I wait it out thinking it would be nothing. We stay home all day Friday just cuddling and playing around the house. We even went to Gymboree and dinner Friday night because John Whitten was in such a good mode. But early Saturday morning Shaun woke me up because the heat radiating off of John Whitten (who was in between us in the bed) was so hot it actually woke Shaun up. Did I mention that he hasn't been nursing well over the last few days... When I told this to the pediatrician he automatically said that he thought it might be an ear infection. Turns out Dr. Walley paid attention in medical school, because sure enough my sweet John Whittne has DOUBLE ear infections. He said that the right ear looked really bad, so he wasn't at all surprised that he was not nursing very well.

Hopefully the antibiotics we got will clear it up over the next few days and he will be feeling much better. A BIG, BIG...make that HUGE thank you to MeMe for coming over to pick Lillian up and take her for the day so I could take John Whitten to the doctor. Lillian had SO much fun with her MeMe. She actually cried when it was time to leave. Shaun had to study and I know that the two hour wait at the doctors office would have been unbearable for Miss Lillian if I had had to drag her a long with us. So thank you Tina for stepping in today on such short notice. We are so blessed to have you and Steve!

my poor little man in the waiting room at the doctor.

Oh, and let me mention how much he weighed today- 20.3 lbs!! He officially weighs more than Lillian did at her one year check up! And that is after not having eaten all morning. He will be five months old on Tuesday and at his four month check up he weighed 17.3. So he has basically gained THREE pounds in less than a month! What a chunky monkey!!
